Assignment

Letter of Advice

For this assignment, you will write a letter of advice to either a newly engaged couple or a group of coworkers. Imagine that either the engaged couple or coworkers hear that you are taking a course in interpersonal communication and want advice regarding how to communicate in their personal or professional relationships. Based on what you have learned in this course, what advice would you give them regarding how to communicate effectively? How can you use what you have learned in this class to offer a couple or group of co-workers advice to have more positive relationships? Write your paper in the form of a letter. Please review the  Sample Final Paper.

Instructions
Use the list of learning outcomes to write your letter. The course learning outcomes you will need to cover are:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications.
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships.
  • Describe strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts.
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications.

For each of the five learning outcomes, create a separate heading that states the learning outcome that you are addressing. Then, address the following for each segment:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications. Why do the principles matter? How can your couple or group of co-workers overcome the barriers you have listed?
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem. Begin by defining each term and then explain how these three notions of the self potentially impact your couple or group of co-workers relationship. What advice can you offer to help them develop a positive self-concept or build each other’s self-esteem?
  • Illustrate the importance of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships. What role does self-disclosure play in your couple or partner’s relationship? How can their relationships be improved by them becoming more emotionally intelligent?
  • Evaluate strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts. Explain one or two potential conflicts and then present at least two strategies for addressing the dispute(s).
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications. First, define these two key terms. Then, explain the importance of gender and culture in relationships generally and for your couple or group specifically. What advice can you give to become a better communicator based on the information you have presented?

Content Requirements
You must address all five of the learning outcomes and the questions listed with those objectives. For each objective, be sure to define key terms and relate those ideas directly to advice for your couple or co-workers. The point here is for you to demonstrate how these ideas can be utilized to help people in their relationships. Try to offer specific advice they can integrate into their lives.

Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement and that previews what you plan to cover in your paper. If you are having problems writing a thesis, try using the Thesis Generator.

End with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis and restates your key points.

You must use at least five scholarly sources to help you make your points. Three should be course readings and two should be academic articles you have found yourself through doing research in the University Library. If you need help doing research, visit the University Library, which can be accessed through the Library tab in the left-navigation menu, in your online course.

You must also draw on personal experience to offer advice or to illustrate points. It is acceptable to use hypothetical examples and/or your personal experiences for either your couple or group of co-workers. We simply want to see that you can apply what you have learned to some potential “real world” experience.

The Final Paper

  • Must be eight to 10 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper

Take time to reflect on a specific experience you had in the workplace where you faced the challenge of communication apprehension. Think about how to overcome this challenge. What changes can you make to improve how you communicate at work? Reflect on communication as both the problem and solution.

Write: Based on course materials and your own reflections, address the following:

  • Describe a time you found yourself in a situation where you faced a specific form of communication apprehension in the workplace described by Bevan and Sole. Be sure to explain the apprehension itself and how you experienced it. If your work experience is limited, consider a time when you were working with others in a different context, such as school or a club.
  • Based on what you have learned from class this week, explain some specific strategies you can use to overcome the communication apprehension(s) you listed and make yourself a more competent communicator.

Course project

In Week 3 you began the process of developing your Course Project by brainstorming a list of people who are leaders somehow related to your field of study and who might be good role models for you in your quest to become a leader in your career field. By this point you should have selected a role-model leader. Now you are ready to start gathering information and putting together your actual Course Project (due Week 8).

You will need to do some real research to gather information on the required elements as we explore the topic of leadership. Using the library databases (LexisNexis, EBSCO, ProQuest, etc.), you should identify and gather information from at least three good research sources. Use what you learned from your textbook (Chapter 5) and the Week 4 class discussion to help you find good sources.

Since this project is not just a biography of some famous person, you may only use one source from a biography database. Research to find and gather information on how your leader worked to become a recognized leader and how this person has demonstrated leadership in the field. You must also find information on the definition of leadership and key leadership skills, the role of individual accountability as it relates to leadership, and the process you might follow to develop leadership skills and become a leader.

For Week 5, you are to prepare an outline with a title page and a references page. This assignment will be scored out of 100 points. A thoughtfully-prepared outline will help you organize all of your ideas and establish a framework for your well-supported, meaningful research project.

Your outline should be one to two pages long and should cover all required elements of the project in a logical manner. Each body section of your outline must include cited, researched support from quality sources found in the academic databases.

You must use at least three sources now, though you will most likely use more in your final project since you are continuing to research and learn.

You must also include an APA-formatted title page and a references page listing all the sources you cited in the body of your outline.

Use the model and template in this document to help you decide what to research and how to write your properly APA formatted title page, outline and references page. Your outline can be similar to the model, but you should rewrite it in first person. Substitute the words and phrasing in this outline with ideas that reflect an overview of your project and the details you will include. EX: Change II. Your program area and intended career field to II. My Program: Justice Administration; My Career Goal: FBI Agent. You may add lines or condense sections in the model outline as you see fit.

Please remember that you must research and use source material to back up what you say. All sections marked on the model template with asterisks (*) should include researched information and parenthetical in-text citations.

Solutions to Questions in Political Science

Essay

1. Choose one of the following persons: Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden. Think about the actions and thought processes of this person that we’ve discussed in class. Is the person you chose “rational”? Are their decisions “rational?” Why or why not? In the case of Cheney or Bush, you should discuss their thought processes regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; in the case of Osama bin Laden, you should discuss his thought process regarding the commission of the 9/11 attacks; in the case of Saddam, you will  probably have to discuss whether or not he is “rational” in a more general sense. You might first want to decide what you think is “rational” and then whether the person you chose meets this standard.
2. When and by whom do you think the decision was made to go to war in Iraq?

Assignment

Reflect: As you learned in this week’s readings, many constitutional scholars consider the prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures as one of the most basic freedoms that the Bill of Rights clearly protects. This central freedom supports and protects other essential freedoms, like free speech, press, assembly, and religion. Recently, this core freedom has become a very controversial debate topic as large American cities, like New York City, have instituted police procedures described as “stop and frisk.” In these cities, when a police officer has reason to believe that a person is armed there is a set protocols for police officers that they must accomplish in order to determine if the suspected individual is a threat to public safety. For example, officers can make stops based on suspicious activities and frisk individuals for weapons. Courts have found this to be within the boundaries of the Fourth Amendment until just recently.

Write: In your initial post of at least 250 words, utilize the Constitution, established case law, and scholarly sources to complete the following assignments:

Describe one argument that supports “stop and frisk” policies.

Describe one argument that opposes “stop and frisk” policies.

Explain which argument is the most constitutionally sound. Why?

Provide real-world examples to support your answers. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Reflect: The federal government has many duties, obligations, and powers under the Constitution. Some scholars argue that the reach of the federal government should be limited and constrained. Other scholars argue that the federal government should not be constrained or limited where the welfare of the U.S. people is concerned. For example, in the case, Gonzales v. Raich, the boundaries of the federal government’s definition of interstate commerce are in question. In this case, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents took marijuana plants from a woman’s home in California under the Federal Controlled Substances Act. However, under California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996, the plants were allowed for medical use.

Write: In your initial post of at least 250 words, utilize the Constitution, established case law, and scholarly sources to address the following questions:

  • Does the federal government have the right to ban marijuana under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution? Why or why not?
  • What are some of the political issues that surround this case?

Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references according to APA standards.

Reflect: The judicial branch of government was designed not only to serve as a check on the power of the executive and legislative branches but also to be the final arbiter on disputes among states and between the states and the federal government. One important arbitration tool utilized by the judicial branch is judicial review. Judicial review is one of the U.S. Constitution’s most provocative features as it plays an important role in shaping the laws that impact our society.

Write: In your initial post of at least 250 words, utilize the Constitution, established case law, and scholarly sources, to complete the following assignments:

Define judicial review.

Define judicial activism and judicial restraint.

Provide one recent example of judicial review by the Supreme Court and explain if the reviews are considered examples of judicial restraint or judicial activism and why.

Please remember to cite all of the sources you plan on using throughout your paper.  If you don’t, it’s considered plagiarism.   You have to give credit to the person/people whom provided the valuable information that you will use in your paper. YOU WILL USE TURNITIN FOR YOUR FINAL PAPERS.

Paper Structure

You are required to have no less than 8 pages typed.  This means the body of your work.

If you choose to use graphs or charts, this will not count towards the seven pages.  Your title page and works cited page are NOT included in the 8-page count.

You are required to have 8 or more references.  Your reference cannot be any older than the year 2000.

  1. At least 8 journal articles, peer reviewed (ex. Journal of Sociology).

OR

  1. At least 7 journal articles and 1 reputable newspaper article (The New York Times, for example)

OR

  1. At least 7 journal articles and 1 article from an established website (American Sociological Association www.asanet.org (Links to an external site.), for example).
  • Wikipedia, yahoo articles, tmz, or any website of similarity is unacceptable.

INTRODUCTION

You should begin with the introduction. You want to keep in mind that your audience is your professor therefore you want to draw your audience in with an interesting, catchy, solid introduction.

You are discussing why you chose this subject and discussing a few key facts about the paper. You are discussing the areas of your study that will be addressed in the literature review.

LITERATURE REVIEW

This is the section that will incorporate all of the data you’ve collected.  All information that you collected from your journals, establish newspapers, reputable websites, etc. will fall under this section.  You are giving me information to support your research.

THEORY

You must pick one or more sociological theories that will support your paper.  Define your theory/theories and use key sociological concepts in discussion of your theory. Remember words such as proletariat, inequalities, social conflict, latent functions, anomie, alienation, postindustrial, symbols and social interactions?  Apply these concepts to your topic when appropriate.

METHODOLOGY

If you plan on conducting either qualitative or quantitative research, place it in this section.  Explain why you chose your specific research and write the data collected in this section.

This section is optional but…..a great way to receive brownie points.  Conducting research strengthens your research therefore increasing your chances of a better grade.

FINDINGS

I’d like to know the findings of your research.  Did you strongly support your outcome? Did your research weaken your proposed outcome?  Did you find any information that you didn’t expect?  How did this change/or not change your understanding of your chosen topic?

Remember, you are not necessarily expected to prove a point or suggest a point of research.  If what you thought may have ended up being wrong in your research, that’s ok.  It just gives you a new perspective and chance to start to understand the basics of conducting research.  REAL RESEARCH includes your own collection of data, formulating a data collection strategy, and countless hours, days, weeks, months, and sometimes two or more semesters to complete.  So do the very best that you can. Relax and enjoy your research!  USE YOUR SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION.

Conclusion

Time to close out your paper.  Reiterate your topic and state your opinions (in a mature manner) in this section. Discuss why this topic is important and how it may contribute to society currently or in the future.

WORKS CITED-This is your very last page.  Please cite in MLA format.  Your works cited should have its own page.

Annotated Bibliography

Instructions

The Annotated Bibliography is designed to assist you with your Research Paper references, to teach you how to search for scholarly journal articles, and to give you practice using proper in-text citations.

For this assignment, you will be annotating 4 scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal articles. You will select 2 articles that support Behavioral Learning Theory in the research, and 2 that support Cognitive Learning Theory. Choose articles that have been published within the last 10 years. It is recommended that you read and review the Research Paper: Final Submission Instructions at this point.

Your Annotated Bibliography must have at least 150 words per summary for each of the 4 articles you selected. You will list your first reference, then a review of the article, then the next reference, then a review of that article, etc. This assignment does not need to include a title page, abstract page, or reference page. However, each reference must be listed in current APA format before the 150-word review.

Each annotation must provide a general summary and also state a rationale as to why you chose to include it in your paper. You must paraphrase; do not include any direct quotes. Do not cite other sources outside of the article that you are reviewing.

Sociology Final Project

Your Final Project will be a Powerpoint presentation that focuses on a movement/group/campaign that you can see yourself being part of. It can be an existing one, or you can create one. You will define how you can contribute and why.

When making your choice, you MUST refer to the definitions of social movements in your text (starting on page 134) and make sure what you have chosen fits the criteria. If not, please ask me or your TA about your idea. THIS IS THE #1 THING LEFT OUT OF PAPERS THAT RESULTS IN AN AUTOMATIC 3-POINT DEDUCTION!What your presentation should include:

3-4 slides–description of the movement you have chosen or created. This should assist the viewer in understanding some brief history of this movement, and it’s current impact (if any). If you are creating a new movement, you will want to give some historical context and cite other movements that have influenced your choice. Describe what kind of movement it is, as stated in the directions above and on page 134. You MUST reference the text.

3-4 slides–description of why you chose or created this movement. This section should focus in on you and your connection to this movement. Inform the viewer of why you chose this movement, your personal beliefs on the issue, and/or the type of social change you hope to accomplish.

3-4 slides–your role or contribution. This section should delve into the organizational aspects of the movement. Share how you see yourself involved and explicitly state your role or how you’d like to contribute.

3-4 slides–how you’re going to help initiate change. This section is about your action plan. How are you going to do what you propose doing? Explain/show the specific parts of your plan. (You can combine 3 & 4, as there may be a lot of overlap)

3-4 slides–how you envision the future (with the assistance of this movement). If all goes as you envision, what will the future look like?

What will be different and how will this movement sustain itself in the long term? + 1 reference slide (not included in minimum/maximum) 15-slide MINIMUM, 20-slide MAXIMUM While this is an approximation of how many slides per section,

YOU MUST CLEARLY LABEL YOUR SLIDES SO THAT IT’S OBVIOUS THAT EACH SECTION WAS COVERED.

FOLLOW THE RUBRIC BELOW!!!

References

Make sure to review the Sources and Citations tutorial in the navigation bar This is a research-based project

You MUST use at least THREE different sources and cite them appropriately Your text does NOT count as one of your source, nor does ANY textbook At least TWO sources must be from peer-reviewed sources; they can’t all be websites. You can download articles off the internet and that is fine because that is still considered a literary sources (because it’s an article). One of your three sources cannot be your text since you MUST cite it, as stated in “About your project.” Branch out and find research on your specific topic. Sources to use:

Read this: Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed Literature vs. Popular Literature Scholarly books Scholarly websites that site their sources with full references Primary and Secondary Resources (Relevant) Movies and documentaries (ask first) may be used for ONE of your THREE SOURCE Other media (ask first) may be used for ONE of your THREE SOURCE

You may use popular literature for ONE of your THREE sources, i.e. Time Magazine, New York Times

Check the FAQs for more info You must state how your choice is a movement (reference your text) You MUST have a reference slide at the end ALL YOUR CITATIONS MUST BE IN APA FORMAT Sources NOT to use(IF YOU USE ANY OF THESE, YOU WILL GET AN AUTOMATIC 5-POINT DEDUCTION PER SOURCE)

Wikipedia Tabloid magazines Internet sources that do not cite their sources Sites that anyone can edit TV shows (documentaries, okay, but ask first)

Presentation Tips

Per the rubric below, there are 20-points dedicated to “Process Components” or graphics and media. You MUST include these elements. If you include a video LABEL IT AS A VIDEO. Type “VIDEO” above or below it. Sometimes it appears to just be a picture. Powerpoint enables you to include images and media and expand creative expression of your mastery. INCLUDE THEM! However, sometimes it does not give you enough space to convey clear messages or include a lot of text. Suggestions include:

Be concise. Get to the point and focus on the salient issues for the educated reader. These are for your peers and instructor, not the novice audience. Have images and text share space so that pictures or media links are not “dangling” without explanation.

Solutions to Questions in Philosophy

Essay

Evaluate the Argument

Identify the issue that is addressed in the argument.

Explain the argument and identify the premises and conclusions.

Evaluate the argument.

If the argument has a deductive component, is it valid and sound? Why?

If the argument has an inductive component, is it strong or weak? Why?

Remember that arguments often contain both inductive and deductive components. Do your best to identify all the arguments that are used to support the position presented in the piece.

Step Two: Create a Counterargument

Create a counterargument to the original argument.

Present premises that support your own position while also pointing out the weaknesses inherent in the original argument. Avoid the use of fallacious reasoning and anecdotal evidence.

If you are using inductive arguments, make sure that they are strong. If you are using deductive arguments, make sure that they are valid and attempt to provide sound premises.

Use factual evidence and/or logical support from at least three scholarly sources to support your argument.

This might require you to play “devil’s advocate.” Remember that you do not need to agree with the position for which you argue. You may need to take on an opposing position to your own personal view and argue from that position. Critical thinkers are able to take on opposing perspectives and identify the strongest arguments from those perspectives.

Written Assignment

Must be 1100 to 1400 words in length, excluding the title page and reference page(s).

Must include at least three scholarly sources to support the counterargument.

Must be formatted according to APA 6th edition style guidelines as outlined in the Writing Center.

Sociology essay

Imagine that you are a researcher and are conducting a study to investigate a community problem. Using behavioral research principles, select a macro systems problem to investigate (there are many suggested in the textbook, e.g. domestic violence, homophobia, sexual abuse, delinquent gangs) and design a study to solve this community problem.

The purpose of your Final Paper is to solve this community problem.

The Final Paper should be eight- to- ten pages (excluding title and reference pages) that includes the following components:
(Please note that for the purposes of offering instruction, examples have been given below about a research study involving the use of financial reward programs to combat truancy. Please make sure that you create a study that does not investigate the same content.)

  1. Introduction – This section should include a brief summary of the community problem that will be addressed, as well as the approach that will be used to investigate and solve the problem.
  2. Statement of the problem – The purpose of this section is to specify the main research question (e.g., Does enrollment in a financial reward program reduce truancy?) and define the community problem in more depth (e.g., truancy), analyzing why it is a problem. In addition, you will explain the problem-solving method you plan to employ (e.g., enrollment in a financial reward program) and state your main hypothesis. (e.g., Enrollment in a financial reward program is expected to reduce student truancy in the short term, but its long-term effects are difficult to predict.)
  3. Literature Review – In this section, research findings pertaining to both the community problem and problem solving method need to be illustrated. (e.g., Relevant articles may include those on the prevalence of truancy, the impact of truancy, previous methods used to combat truancy, and the benefits of financial reward programs.)
  4. Methodology – Explain how your Final Paper will investigate the problem. How will the study be designed? How many participants will be involved in the study and how will they be recruited? (e.g., Four classes at a local high school will be given the opportunity to participate in the research study. Two of these classes will be enrolled in the financial reward program.) How will data be collected? (e.g., Truancy data will be collected on all of the participants for the six months preceding the reward program, for the duration of the program, and for the six months after completion of the reward program.) What statistics will be used to evaluate the data? (e.g., Inferential statistics will be conducted to compare the truancy levels of the group of students participating in the program with those of the group of students who are not participating in the program.)  Ethical considerations should be discussed to ensure that no unethical research is suggested.
  5. Conclusions – This section should contain concluding remarks about any potential problems that might be encountered in conducting this research study. It should also include speculations on the potential results of the study.

Essay

In this course, you will look at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You will also examine different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue, selected from the list of issues below.

Choose one of the ethical issues from the list below to research and write about. It is recommended that you choose a topic you are familiar with or have thought about previously. For example, you might choose an issue that either worries you or enrages you; you might choose one that you have worked on; or you might choose one that relates to recent events in your community.

Possible Issues

  • Corporate executive compensation
  • Corporate contributions to political campaigns
  • Affirmative action
  • The media and its responsibilities
  • Domestic surveillance
  • Whistle blowing in government or in a business
  • Religion in the workplace
  • Pornography
  • Consumer tracking
  • Ethical problems of gambling
  • Progressive taxation rates
  • Immigration
  • Women’s equality

In your paper, you will apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the issue you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the topics. Explain how the theories and perspectives would analyze the issue. What are the ethical issues? Where are there breaches of ethical behavior? How could each theory help people think about what would constitute virtuous or ethical behavior?

The paper must be eight to ten pages in length (excluding title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly sources from the University Library other than the textbook to support your claims. You can also use the Sociology Research Guide located in the University Library. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.
